UGC, or user-generated content, in marketing usually means short videos and photos made by creators in a natural, everyday style that a brand then uses on its own social channels, website or ads. Unlike an influencer post, UGC is not about the creator's audience: the brand pays for the content and the right to use it. In India, D2C and app brands use UGC heavily because phone-shot, real-feeling videos often perform better in ads than polished commercials.
UGC vs influencer marketing
| Factor | UGC | Influencer marketing |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is posted | Brand's own pages and ads | Creator's own profile |
| What you pay for | Content and usage rights | Content plus access to the creator's audience |
| Follower count | Matters little | Matters a lot |
| Best for | Ad creatives, testing, product pages | Reach, trust, awareness |
Many campaigns use both: influencers post on their profiles, and the brand also gets the rights to reuse the best videos as ads.
UGC formats that work in India
- Unboxing and first impressions
- Problem and solution: a relatable problem, then the product solving it
- Testimonials and reviews in Hindi, English or regional languages
- How-to and demos for apps, gadgets and beauty products
- Before and after where claims can be supported
- Skits and reactions with a light, meme-style hook
- Founder-style or "honest review" voiceovers over product shots
How much does UGC cost in India?
UGC is usually priced per video, plus the product. Because follower count matters less, costs are often lower than sponsored posts from creators of similar skill, but they rise with scripting, multiple hooks, actors, locations, editing and longer usage rights. Always agree the number of videos, revisions, raw footage, usage period and platforms in writing.
Usage rights: the part most brands get wrong
- Specify where the brand can use the content: organic social, paid ads, website, marketplaces or TV.
- Fix a period, for example 3, 6 or 12 months, and the fee for extending it.
- Decide whether the brand can edit, cut or add music and text.
- For paid ads run from the creator's handle, agree whitelisting separately.
- Remember disclosure: ads featuring creators must not mislead viewers, in line with ASCI rules. See our disclosure guide.
A simple UGC brief template
| Section | What to include |
|---|---|
| Product | What it is, price, who it is for |
| Top three benefits | In plain words, with proof you can support |
| Audience | Age, city type, language, the problem they have |
| Format | Length, vertical 9:16, number of hooks, captions on or off |
| Must say / must not say | Key claims allowed, claims to avoid |
| References | Two or three example videos in the style you want |
| Deliverables | Number of videos, raw files, revisions, deadline |
| Usage | Platforms, ads or organic, period |
Hook ideas that stop the scroll
- "I did not expect this to work, but..."
- "Stop buying X until you see this"
- "Three things I wish I knew before buying..."
- A quick before and after where the claim is genuine
- A relatable problem acted out in the first two seconds
Ask creators for several opening hooks on the same video. Testing hooks is often the fastest way to improve ad results.
UGC mistakes to avoid
- Over-scripting until the video looks like a TV ad
- Using one creator profile for every audience
- No clear usage rights in the agreement
- Claims that cannot be substantiated, especially in health and beauty
How to run a UGC programme
- Write a short brief with the product's top three benefits, the audience and examples of the style you want.
- Ask for several hooks per video so you can test different openings.
- Brief a diverse set of creators by age, city and language.
- Test in ads, keep the winners and brief new variations on what works.
- Refresh regularly because ad creatives fatigue quickly.
